The Story of Asteria: Goddess of Shooting Stars

The Birth of Diana and Apollo, Guilio Romano, 1530
Asteria was the Titan goddess of shooting stars. Fleeing Zeus’ wrath after the fall of the Titans, Asteria leapt into the sea, becoming the Island of Delos. Later Asteria’s sister Leto, pregnant with Zeus’ twins and fleeing from his wife Hera, found shelter on Delos and gave birth to Artemis and Apollo.
As the Island of Delos, Asteria created a safe and supportive place for Leto to give birth. Our goal at the Asteria Lab is to conduct research that moves the needle toward every woman and birthing person receiving high quality, accessible, respectful maternity care.
